We started the day out meeting with Myra's nanny and social worker. They provided us with all the tips and know-how to keep Myra growing strong and healthy. We viewed Myra's life book DVD. It was hard to see and hear the thing that we knew but maybe had not internalized totally. At one point Brian reached over and told me that it was ok to cry. I looked at him and said, "When I cry it going to be the ugly, loud cry so, no it is not ok to cry right now."
After the meeting we went back to the care center to send a few hours with Myra. She was taking a bath when we got there and let me tell you she is SO CUTE!!!! She even has a bit of a belly now. I got to feed her lunch out of the little metal cup and we did pretty well together - messy but good. Brian the held her, rocked her and sang to her until she fell asleep. He is totally and helplessly in love ---so am I!
We walked home from the care center because I needed a break from the group after the emotional morning. It was a good, clear your head walk and I felt ready for the afternoon.
We dropped off all the donations Andrew brought with him to Peter, Yohannes and Ephraim at the Ethiopian Guest House. Then Andrew took us to Corre.
Corre is easily one of the poorest places on earth. The poverty literally took my breath away. We visited the homes of many single mothers, lepers and AIDs victims...and I use the term home very liberally. After the village tour, Andrew's friend Sami took us to the trash dump to see first hand how the people of Corre survive. The people eat the trash to stay alive. We walked next to a woman ...or more like a young girl with her infant child on her back into the dump. She was there to find food and trash to sell. The smell, fumes, hopelessness made me physically sick. It was just too much for my privileged mind to comprehend.
